Shows We Love: Amy Masters: Interior Life

Amy Masters: Interior Life show is on view at Hawk and Hive Gallery in Andes, NY until October 19.

Peonies, oranges, April, September, Parisian cafes, these are some of the subjects that inspire the artist in her approach to still life that borders abstraction. Giorgio Morandi, Pierre Bonnard, Richard Diebenkorn and Jane Freilicher are cited among her influences. Vessels, flowers, fruits, and shadows appear both familiar and estranged. Color always plays a central role – whether muted blue, gray, mustard yellow or red.

We interviewed the artist in 2016, and have been following her evolution ever since. When asked about her color palette, Masters explained: “My palette changes a lot. I get into a color palette, and I work on it until I feel like I exhausted all the possibilities. Late last summer I did a series of white paintings. I don’t know how I got into this subtle palette, but I just wanted things to be very peaceful. I was looking for a way to convey that. I like to use a little bit of red, because it makes everything else look so much calmer. Generally, I like a limited palette. One reason I’m attracted to prints is their limited palette. Then you have to think about other things like the image, and the composition.” Read our full interview with the artist at https://artinthecatskills.com/2016/09/06/featured-artist-amy-masters/.
