Humans of the Catskills: Brett Barry

Brett Barry

Journey to the Catskills:

My parents built a house here when I was 9 years old, and we came up almost every weekend and summer. When my wife and I were expecting our first child, we moved up from our New Jersey apartment and built onto a small seasonal cabin. We’ve been here full-time for 17 years!

Vocation:

I am a voice-over performer, audio producer, and educator. I record and produce voice-overs, audiobooks, promos, and podcasts from a studio in the Phoenicia area, and I teach in the department of Digital Media and Journalism at SUNY New Paltz.

Avocation:

Also, audio — haha! — I produce a biweekly Catskills podcast called Kaatscast. Mostly, it’s a labor of love, covering interesting Catskills stories in a format I know well! I also love the outdoors, enjoying nature, and trying to play my ukulele decently.

Happiness Is:

Doing good work and putting it out into the world. Also, watching my family pursue and succeed at their own passions.

Favorite Dish:

My wife is the cook in our house, and I’m fortunate for that, because if it were up to me, there’d be a lot of nachos and pasta. The pandemic put a pause on our dining out, but we’re starting to get out there again. We just had an extraordinary Friday fish fry at Dixon Roadside, and I’m looking forward to a Peekamoose dinner soon.
