Humans of the Catskills: Matthew Avitabile

Matthew Avitabile

Journey to the Catskills:

In a matter of speaking, the Mountain Eagle. My father worked at the Mountain Eagle as a young man before I was born, then moved our family to the area in 1989 to work at the Mountain Eagle a second time. We’ve moved around a bit, but have been here ever since, and in Middleburgh since 1990.

Vocation:

A little bit of everything. I run the Mountain Eagle newspaper and have since early 2017. To pay the bills at home, I’m a history professor at SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Cobleskill, and Hartwick College. I’ve been teaching since 2010. Lastly, I was Mayor of my hometown of Middleburgh from 2012-2020.

Avocation:

Coin collecting, reading, baseball.

Happiness Is:

Serving a cause greater than yourself.

Favorite Dish:

Eggplant parmesan.

Ideal Country Home:

Spacious, self-sufficient, practical. Close enough to be able to get to civilization and far enough away to be out of it.
